State of the (You)nion: Fall Social Media Updates

It’s been a busy past few weeks for the platform, featuring some notable announcements and updates to the app. Keeping pace with Periscope and Facebook, CEO Kevin Systrom has confirmed that live video will be coming to the service, which on the surface appears quite similar to Facebook’s “Live” feature (this should come as no surprise given that Facebook owns Instagram.) Additionally, users of the app will now be able to send boomerangs (where a burst of photos are stitched together in a mini video), mention other users in their stories, and click or place “See more” links at the bottom of their posts.
This slew of features all seems to revolve around the business aspect of the app, which makes sense seeing as Instagram is now introducing a shopping aspect to their app. According to a post on their website, each applicable post will have a tap to view icon at the bottom left of a photo. Tapping this icon will bring up to five different tags that link to items users can research and purchase. While the feature is starting out relatively small (only twenty retailers have been invited to participate for now), it could prove to be massively beneficial for the app and businesses who use it (which is an area that Snapchat may have a tougher time with).
